My First AI-Assisted email

Dear Mom,

As you know, I have been blogging since 2009. Mrs. Evelyn Heimlich and another older Jewish woman, who was a patient of mine, both encouraged me to write a book one day. I know that you have also encouraged me to write for as long as I can remember. I also cherish the fact that we are a family of editors. You and Katie have been instrumental in reading over key documents and providing me with suggestions. Now I have decided, at the encouragement of a patient of mine who is a professional writer, to try this artificial intelligence tool called Grammarly. I thought you should be the first person to receive an AI-assisted email from me. By the writing of this sentence, AI has already made 5 suggestions, including errors to correct. It is good with commas, spelling, and content. Though it suggested a comma after the word spelling. My former English teacher, Mr. Wilkes, would have disagreed. He always felt that I overused commas.

I was not an early adopter of AI tools, concerned that they would take over and write on my behalf in a way that would make my writing not my own. All said, I believe that AI has come a very long way in a short time period. I have not incorporated "generative AI," which would write on my behalf; rather, I find this AI editor to be quite helpful. It has been a life goal to write a book. Right now, it seems I have so little time and so little bandwidth to be able to accomplish this. Ultimately, if I had a more substantial break like a sabbatical or even retirement, I think I could get around to it. I think it might be interesting to apply Grammarly to my blog. I am not sure how to do this, but I think it would do a pretty good job as an editor.

I write these things to you, with Katie copied on the email, to let you know that nothing nor anyone can ever replace you as my very best editors. All the same, I think this tool is far better than tools that exist within word processing apps like Word. I think it may really help Katie and Mike as well. Please let me know what you think.

Love,

Holly
